Between You and Me, I Have a Simple Sugar Cookie Secret…
I have a weakness for iced sugar cookies. They are probably my favorite dessert aside from a great piece of cheesecake. I have used my grandma’s roll out sugar cookie recipe for many many years, to make cut out cookies with my kids. A few years ago my friend, Kristen, told me about the secret to simple sugar cookies… You can buy the cut out shapes already made!!!!! All you have to do is bake them and decorate. And, the best part is, they are delicious!
You can find these marvelous morsels at Gordon Food Services (GFS). They are $10 for a box at my local store, and worth every single penny. Even better, I have purchased pumpkin shapes in the fall and I saw spring themed cut outs there as well once.
I have used two different types of frosting on these. Today I used a flood icing. You can find the recipe that I like here. I substituted vanilla extract for the almond extract, but otherwise followed the directions. This makes beautifully decorated cookies, but is very time intensive. Because today’s cookies are for a party, I invested the time to make them pretty. The other option that I have used for tasty frosting is crazy simple and fast. You won’t believe it, but Jiffy makes a sweet icing mix. All you have to do is add hot water. You can use a knife to spread this frosting and then add sprinkles if you like them.
There you have it. If you are looking for a way to simplify your Christmas baking, make a trip to GFS. I saw gingerbread men cookies there too, and I may have to test those out next!
